Introducing my Big 5 European Leagues App
It provides the latest statistics and current league table for major football leagues in England, Germany, Spain, France and Italy
Football (aka soccer) has been getting more popular in the United States in recent years. Despite having its own domestic league in MLS, most Americans are fans of one of the five major European leagues. Everyone knows the quality in Europe is just better.
The English Premier League
is the probably most popular sports league in the world, and the other four European domestic football leagues are not far behind. American broadcasters have been putting European matches on TV with more regularity in recent years to quench fans’ increasing thirst for the beautiful game stateside.Premier League matches air on one of NBC, USA or NBC’s streaming service Peacock channels every weekend. Meanwhile, ESPN carries La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A matches on its flagships or its ESPN+ streaming channels. BeIN SPORTS, a lesser know broadcaster, carries Ligue 1. You also see Champions League matches during the week on CBS or CBS Sports — its parent Paramount Global inked a $1.5 billion, six-year deal for U.S. TV rights last year. So football is here to stay.
To capitalize on the growing interest — and frankly, to alleviate my issues in finding this info easily across the internet
— I created a web app using the Shiny framework for R to help you see the latest standings and stats for the Big 5 leagues.Feel free to provide feedback on your experience with the app. I hope you enjoy it!
If you’re interested in a deep dive of the EPL check out my Premier League Forecasts app.
The Fotmob mobile app is the best resource in my opinion. The attention to design and user experience is second to none.
I am planning to add fixtures and match results soon as well.
