Alcaraz comes back from the brink to win his second French Open title
The 22-year old Spaniard defended his Roland Garros crown with an epic defeat of Jannik Sinner on Sunday
In their first-ever meeting in a Major final, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner Sunday night for the French Open title.
Alcaraz defended his title by coming back from two sets down — where he had to save three championship points — eventually winning a near-6-hour marathon 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2).
The final between tennis’ two biggest superstars marked the sixth major championship trophy in a row won by either Sinner or Alcaraz. After two decades of dominance of The Big Three1, the “New Two” have officially announced this the new era of men’s tennis.
Rafael Nadal was the undisputed king of clay winning 14 French Open titles in his spectacular career. He was honored at the beginning of this year’s tournament, one that ended with his countryman Alcaraz carrying the French Open torch. Only Novak Djokovic’s wins in 2016, 2021 and 2023, and rare wins by Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer earlier in the century, interrupted a 20-year stranglehold the Spanish giants have had on the tournament.
Daniil Medvedev was the last player not belonging to the Big Three or the New Two to win a major trophy in 2021.
